As
we well know, Manitoba
winters are down right c-c-cold!!
As we bundle up for the weather by putting on our mittens,
extra sweaters and scarves, it is just as important to remember how this winter
wonderland can affect our pets. Here are
some important safety tips for your pet.
Keep your cat inside.
Cats who are allowed to stray can freeze body
parts like the tips of their ears or their tail. Outdoor cats are also at risk of becoming
lost, injured and are exposed to toxins and infectious diseases. Cats will sometimes sleep under the hood of a
car in an attempt to keep warm and can be fatally injured by the fan belt when
the motor is started.
Antifreeze is a
lethal poison. Cats and dogs are attracted to the taste of antifreeze. Antifreeze contains ethylene glycol
which
even a few drops can be lethal to your pet. Be sure to clean up antifreeze
spills from your vehicles or try to use antifreeze that contains propylene
glycol.
Keep your pet warm
and dry. Wipe off your dog after it
has come in from outside to remove snow, salt, and ice pellets. Pets should not be left in the car during
cold weather as it can act like a refrigerator, holding in the cold. If you have an outdoor dog, it is important
to provide warm shelter and food and water should be checked to make sure it
hasn’t frozen. Pets should be kept
indoors during periods of colder weather.
